How to Create a Subdomain in Squarespace (The Easiest Way)

Squarespace subdomain main

A subdomain can be a fantastic way to separate sections of your Squarespace site. For example, if you want to create an eCommerce store or blog, or build localized content for different countries.

Here’s how to create a subdomain in Squarespace in less than three minutes.

How to add a subdomain in Squarespace

Step 1: Access your domains dashboard

Go to account.squarespace.com/domains to access your domains Dashboard.

Spark Plugin domains dashboard

Click on the domain you want to add your subdomain to and click Website.

Scroll down to Domain Forwarding Rules and click Add Rule.

Step 2: Add your Squarespace subdomain

In Forward From, add the name of the subdomain you want to add (in this case, shop.)

Keep your subdomain name short, easy to remember, and avoid using numbers or special characters.

In Forward To, enter the full URL of the page you’d like to redirect to your subdomain.

In Advanced settings, choose whether the subdomain will be a temporary (301) or permanent (302) redirect.

Most subdomains are permanent redirects, but there might be times when you want to set up a temporary subdomain. For example, if you’re creating a seasonal shop or staging environment.

Keep Forwarding over SSL on. SSL will help keep your subdomain secure and protected.

Click Save when you’re done.

Step 3: Test

Finally, test your subdomain URL in private browsing mode to make sure it points to the right page.

If you need to make changes, go back to the Domain Forwarding Rules and click edit next to the subdomain you’ve created.

You can delete a Squarespace subdomain by clicking the red trash can next to the subdomain.

Squarespace subdomains: additional things to bear in mind

What is a Squarespace subdomain?

A subdomain is a prefix that’s added to your website domain name to create a new section of your website.

For example, shop.mywebsite.com or uk.mywebsite.com.

You can use a subdomain to organize your content (especially if you have a larger website) and target specific customers.

Help! I can’t see an option to add a subdomain in Squarespace!

If you struggle to add a Squarespace subdomain using the steps above, you can add it manually – open your domains dashboard as normal, click DNS, and add the relevant presets. This guide will help.

If you can’t see the settings to add subdomains, it might be because you have your website domain with another service. In this case, add your subdomains through your service provider instead.

How many Squarespace subdomains can I have?

You can have as many Squarespace subdomains as you like.

Bear in mind though that too many redirects can cause your website to run more slowly, which can affect your search engine optimization efforts.
